MORE IDIOMS

Here some more common  idioms to practice. Remember that when speaking one of the most important things is to know the meaning of many expressions according to a specific context.

used to (something):  accustomed to something

"My friend is not used to living in such a big city."

take place :- to happen, to occur

"The soccer game took place on the coldest day of the year. "

take out (something) or take (something) out: - to remove something from somewhere

"The teacher told us to take out our books." 

"I took out some onions from the refridgerator."

right away:  immediately

"I forgot my book at home but I will go and get it right away." 

I FEEL SICK (5°)

To start Unit 4, please study the target vocabulary related to illnesses and some feelings. Practice the words or expressions as follow. Remember to have the list into your notebook.

ARE THERE ANY FOOD? (8°)

Think about posible situations or conversations in one of these places. You can choose one of these suggestions or even create a new one. Please, be sure to use THERE IS/ THERE ARE (affirmative, negative, questions and answers) and the expressions SOME/ANY appropriately. See page 16 in your textbook as an example.

IF CLAUSE II (11°)

If clauses are used to talk about unreal situations. If clause is callled "condition" and the other part is called "result".

In Conditional II, If clause is used with the present simple form of the verb and the result is in future tense with "will".

Look at the list of situations and write or complete one of these ideas as a comment. Use the Conditional.

WHAT WILL YOU DO IF...?

- It rains tomorrow.
- You don't study hard
- Your mother wakes up late
- Your father quits work
-  You find a wallet

ARRANGED PLANS (10°)

This is another way to express future actions. Use the Present Continuous and an expression of time.

"I am visiting my grandparents next weekend".

WHAT ARE THEY LIKE? (9°)

We use this question to ask about people description. It can be about physical appeareance or personality adjectives.

What are __________ like) (Plural)

Look at these photos, choose one of these famous and answer the question.

Then, add another famous person. It can be your favorite one.

ARTICLES

English language have three articles. Each one has a dfferent use depending of if what you are talking about  is definite or indefinted.

Use A  or AN, to refer things that are not specIfic, it is to say, in general.

A car--- refers to any car

Use THE, to refer things that are known by the speaker or that have been mentioned. It is used for both male and female, singular and plural.

The car --- refers to a specific car

WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE IN SOUTH AMERICAN CITIES? (7°)

Look at the following map, print it and paste it in your notebook and make sentences about the weather in some cities of South-America. 

Example: What's the weather today in Quito?

                It´s rainy and cold.

If you want, change the map and design your own weather map of other parts of the world.

Review the vocabulary and expressions related to clothes on lesson 2A and practice with the following activity.

IN PAIRS: Choose a place or a special event you have to go and write a short conversation in which you ask about what to wear for it. (Remember to use the expressions on lesson 2A)

FOR EXAMPLE:

A: I have a party. It´s Mark's birthday. What should I wear?

B: Cool! I think you should wear your pattern blue dress.

A: Are you crazy? I tryed it on yesterday. It doesn´t look good anymore.

B: Why?

A: It´s too small now.

B: Oh! I see. What about my  blouse?

A: Which one?

B: The stripped pink one.

A: Really? It's more my style. 

B: And, what about my long skirt?

A: Yes, It looks great! Thanks!

WHAT'S A SLANG?

As we have seen, in English we can find some expressions used in informal contexts. There are another kind which are so popular as idioms are: Slangs. A slang is a word or expression used in determined social settings and they are not considered standard for everyone´s speaking.

Slangs are used more specificly inside regions or groups and their meaning depends on the original familiar context given by the user.
