UNIT 2: SOLIDARITY (11° STUDENTS)

READ TEH DEFINITION FOR NGO, THEN LOOK AT THE EXAMPLE AND WRITE A SIMILAR TEXT WITH ANOTHER ORGANIZATION FROM ANY PART OF THE WORLD.

NGO's
A non-governmental organization (NGO) is any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group which is organized on a local, national or international level. Task-oriented and driven by people with a common interest, NGOs perform a variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to Governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political particpation through provision of information. Some are organized around specific issues, such as human rights, environment or health. They provide analysis and expertise, serve as early warning mechanisms and help monitor and implement international agreements. Their relationship with offices and agencies of the United Nations system differs depending on their goals, their venue and the mandate of a particular institution.

EXAMPLE:

THE HISTORY OF GREENPEACE NGO

1. (STARTING: HOW DID THIS NGO START? In 1971, motivated by their vision of a green and peaceful world, a small team of activists set sail from Vancouver, Canada, in an old fishing boat. These activists, the founders of Greenpeace, believed a few individuals could make a difference.

2. (MISSION: WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL FOR THIS NGO?) Their mission was to "bear witness" to US underground nuclear testing at Amchitka, a tiny island off the West Coast of Alaska, which is one of the world's most earthquake-prone regions.

3. (IMPORTANT FACTS) Amchitka was the last refuge for 3000 endangered sea otters, and home to bald eagles, peregrine falcons and other wildlife.Even though their old boat, the Phyllis Cormack, was intercepted before it got to Amchitka, the journey sparked a flurry of public interest. The US still detonated the bomb, but the voice of reason had been heard. Nuclear testing on Amchitka ended that same year, and the island was later declared a bird sanctuary.

4. (CURRENT WOKS: WHAT ARE THEY CURRENTLY DOING?Today, Greenpeace is an international organization that prioritises global environmental campaigns.

5. (OTHER INFORMATION: WHERE IS THIS NGO FROM?, WHAT COUNTRIES DO THEY WORK IN? WHO WORK THIS NGO FOR?, ETC.)Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Greenpeace has 2.8 million supporters worldwide, and national as well as regional offices in 41 countries.

CREATE AN AMAZING HERO STORY (9º STUDENTS)

Hello!
Remember your story must be about a hero. You can write about people or maybe animals. Re-read the example in your workbooks.

Here another example:

LIFEGUARD TOBY : By Farid Villanueva

Toby, my dog is my favorite hero. He saved me from drowning in my grandparents' lake. It was last year summer. My family decided to go vacations there. We arrived to the farmhouse and inmediately we went to have a picnic near the lake. I was swimming when suddenly something strange pulled my legs and I began to sink. I shouted for help and Toby, my dog,  jumped into the lake, swam, took my long hair and carried me to lake's side. It was incredible. We were surprised. Toby was really a strong dog.
