IDIOMS OF THE WEEK

Pay attention to the following idioms that are very common in English:

all day long:  the whole day

"The girl was happy to wait all day long for the mail to arrive." 

air one`s dirty laundry:  to make public something embarrassing that should be a secret

"The dinner party became uncomfortable when the host began to air his colleagues dirty laundry in public."

as a result of (something):  because of something that has happened

"As a result of a car accident my friend could not work for several months."

at first:  at the beginning

"At first, I did not want to go to the movie but I later changed my mind."

BEHAVIOR IDIOMS I

Below, you'll find the idioms of this week. It is the first part related to actions or people behavior.

"add fuel to the flames"

If you add fuel to the flames, you do or say something that makes a difficult situation even worse. He forgot their wedding anniversary, and his apologies only added fuel to the flames .

"answer call of nature nature's call" When a person answers the call of nature, they go to the toilet. I had to get up in the middle of the night to answer the call of nature  "bite hand that feeds you"      If you bitethe hand that feeds   you, you are unfriendly or do harm to someone who is kind to you.

WILL & MIGHT

Usamos will, won’t, might (podría) y might not para expresar nuestras opiniones sobre el futuro, o predicciones.

Usamos will y won’t cuando estamos seguros de lo que pensamos.

I studied a lot. I’ll pass the exam.

Usamos might y might not cuando no estamos muy seguros de lo que pensamos.

She is ill, so she might not come to the party.

English idioms or idiomatic expressions are common when using this language. They are words put together with a different meaning from the one you can find in a dictionary and involving the context.

This is used as a response to being thanked, suggesting that the help given was no trouble. It is similar to "You're welcome".

'Caught with your pants down'

If you are caught with your pants down, you are exposed in an embarrassing situation.  It can also mean that you were caught unprepared for a situation or an event.

You can't hide elephants in mouseholes means that some issues/problems/challenges cannot be hidden/concealed but have to be faced and dealt with.

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE MOVIE? (8º)

EXERCISE 4, PAGE 41: Read the following conversation giving opinions about a movie and then, write a short conversation. It can be about a movie you both liked or only one of you liked. Try to use some of the expressions in exercise 3C, page 41.

A: What did you think of the movie?

B: I thought it was great! What about you?

A: I didn't like it at all. It was boring.

B: That's because you were so busy eating pop corn.

A: And you were so into the movie.

B: Yeah, I was. I thought the acting was great.

A: No, it wasn't. It was awful, and I couldn't see the screen.

B: Why not?

A: Because there was a ver tall man sitting in front of me. All I saw was the back of his head.

B: Oh, no. Well, at least you enjoyed the pop corn.

A: Because I had nothing elsa to do. Next time, let's watch an action movie.

B: Uhmm, not with me. Go with your friends.
